Today I watched the Presidential debates and saw Mecca Normal open for The Julie Ruin.
They could not have been more different experiences.
I actually hadn’t heard of Mecca Normal before tonight, but their music made an incredible impact on me. I’ve been behind on my publishing schedule (this comic is even going up late), but this show and this band helped energize me so that I could get caught up.
Make art. Change the world.
Sad music for me is a way to siphon off the little bits of excess I can’t hold on to. To release it all in small bursts of music that acknowledges that I’m not the only person who struggles with these things.
And then I make asshole jokes about it because if I can’t laugh at my darkness, it might just take me over.
And also because I’m kind of an asshole sometimes.
She never had to ask me twice.
It’s a great art form written for an audience who has terrible taste.
It’s no wonder two of my favorite things are musicals and comic books.
